On-Site Health Care For Cisco's RTP Employees Means Big Contract for Durham Tech Startup

Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) is bringing a new benefit directly to its 6,500 employees and contractors in Research Triangle Park: on-site doctors. It’s a benefit already available to employees in San Jose, California, where employees will no longer have to leave the office for check-ups.

Ed Paradise, site lead for the company, confirmed the news Wednesday. The center, located in an entire floor of Building 9, was a two-part project, including a fitness center. The on-site wellness center will be staffed through a partnership with the UNC Physicians Network.

Cisco has Durham startup Bivarus to provide patient-reported data to help monitor the quality of the experience.

CEO Dave Levin says it’s a huge contract win for his company – and not just in terms of dollars. For Levin, who initially imagined his technology in hospitals, it’s an entirely new vertical.

“We’re going to be the platform that measures how their employees actually experience the program,” he says. He was introduced to Cisco through his existing relationship with UNC Healthcare.

Bivarus currently has 15 customers, including UNC Healthcare and Johns Hopkins Medicine, and raised nearly $2 million earlier this year.

As for Cisco, it’s one of a growing number of tech companies trying to create a mini-community at its campus. SAS Institute has long-touted its own on-site health center.
